Born in Kythera, Greece. He was Deputy Minister of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs (October 6, 2009 - June 17, 2011). He has also been appointed by the Prime Minister in charge of the open government project.

He has been a Professor of Probability and Statistics in the Department of Statistics of the Athens University of Economics and Business, from 1991 to 2015, when he retired.

He has been a visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. At UC Berkeley, he has contacts with the Department of Statistics, the Survey Research Center and the Center for Studies in Higher Education. His Stanford links are with the Department of Statistics and the Center of Deliberative Democracy of the Department of Communication.

He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Greek Parliament (since 1987) and director of the Institute of Statistical Documentation Research and Analysis (since 1996).

 

Before joining the Athens University of Economics and Business he taught at The University of Patras (Greece), School of Engineering, Division of Applied Mathematics (as a Professor (1987-1991) and as an Associate Professor (1984-1987)), The University of  Crete (Greece), Department of Mathematics, (as an Associate Professor (1983-1986)), The University of  Iowa (USA), Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, (as an Associate Professor (1982-1983)), The University of  Missouri-Columbia (USA), Department of Statistics, (as an Assistant Professor (1980-1982)), The University of  Dublin, Trinity College (Ireland), Department of Statistics, (as a Lecturer (1979-1980)).
